Thanksgiving
Day
Today, the
fourth Thursday of November, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a special
day for families.
On 6
September 1620, 102 men, women and children left Plymouth (England) on a ship
called the Mayflower. They were Puritans and they suffered persecution in
England. On 11 September 1620 they landed on the north-east coast of North
America. As it was almost winter, there wasn’t much food. They built small
houses to live in but it was too late to grow crops. Half of the Pilgrims died.
But, one
spring day, a native American called Squanto decided to help pilgrims. And they
learned how to grow corn, hunt and fish. Then, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag
became friends. By November 1621 everyone had a home and food. They decided to
celebrate a dinner to thank the native Americans and God.
Nowadays,
people celebrate Thanksgiving Day eating roast turkey, cranberry sauce,
potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie. Families gather and enjoy a special day giving
thanks.
