Simple past of the verb to be

SUBJECT + PAST FORM. 

 He was old

The simple past describes an action situation in the past.

• When the event is in the past: My childhod was sad.
• When the event is completely finished: Last summer I was in London.
• When you say (or understand) the time /pace of the event: I was in Tim's bedroom.
